Reading Lately - March

April 12, 2022

Happy Tuesday.  I am joining Jana Says and Life According to Steph for their monthly book club.  Everyone shares the books they have read for the month.

I finally decided to renew my library card.  I had no idea that a library card expires every three years.  It felt good to visit our local library again.  I can even download free books onto my kindle app.  I even convinced my husband to renew his library card.

While I was at the library, I decided to take out the book Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan.

Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan

My daughter read this book and recommended it to me.  I've read all of the Crazy Rich Asian books by this author and loved them.

Book Description:

When Lucie Tang Churchill meets George Zao at a lavish wedding in Capri, she can't stand him. She can't stand that he gallantly offers to trade hotel rooms with her so she can have a sea view, that he knows more about the island than she does, and worst of all, that he kisses her in the darkness of the ancient ruins. What would her Mayflower-descended, Wall Street-wealthy family think of him? But years later, when Lucie is weekending with her fiancé in East Hampton, George unexpectedly appears and Lucie must decide - does she follow her head or her heart?

My Thoughts On This Book:

This story pays homage to the book Room With a View by E. M. Forster.  This is an updated version and romance between the two main characters that attend an over-the-top wedding in Capri, Italy.  I enjoyed reading Kevin Kwan's descriptions of the character's ultra-rich homes, parties, restaurants, and gorgeous designer clothes.  I found the footnotes of where the characters attended school and college entertaining to read.  I found myself laughing at different parts of the book and I liked being transported to Italy, Manhattan, and the Hamptons.  I'm looking forward to reading more of Kevin Kwan's books in the future.

The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles

Book Description:

In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction—to the City of New York.

My Thoughts On This Book:

I stopped reading this book temporarily to read the book Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan.

This book was highly recommended to me by my husband.  I'm still reading this book and I'll keep you updated about it next month.

Have you've read any of these books?  What book are you reading now?

  2. Oh, I am so glad you are back at the library! I am a retired school librarian and now loving my public library. They allow you to reserve books online and then have them ready for you to pick up. I always end up bringing home way more than I have time to read. Thanks for sharing some good titles - Happy Reading !

  6. I like the sound of the first one Julie, I'm going to see if it's available at my Library. We have an app too and I find most of the books I read these days are through the app, eBooks are kinder on my eyes because I can enlarge the print. x

  8. Hi Julie, I think both books sound really interesting! I haven't been reading lately, but I just ordered a bunch of new books to dig into. I haven't been to the library since the pandemic, either. I miss going - maybe I will check it out soon. I'm sure my card is expired, too! x K
