A Walk in Union Square NYC

April 11, 2018

Hello Friends.  I hope you're having a good week.  Does it feel like spring weather where you live?

Well, in my neck of the woods the weather for March and April have been really crazy!

The month of March was really cold and we had a few really bad Nor'easters.  It's April now and we've already had a few snow storms with many inches of snow.  We were luckly that the snow melted quickly from the last storm we had.

I usually meet up once a month with friends in Union Square, New York City.  I really look forward to this meet up and last week the weather was agreeable.  We all decided to meet up, yay!

I did a post back in 2016 about the group of friends that I meet up with once a month.  If you would like to read about that you can click HERE.

I decided to take a few photos to share with you since the weather was nice that morning when I arrived at Union Square.

Union Squre New York City

You can see that some of the trees are just starting to bud and will have flowers and green leaves soon.

Union Square Park NYC

I love that the bushes and plants are green.  Soon there will be leaves on these trees and you won't be able to see the buildings as clearly as now.

The sky was still dark and cloudy, but you can see behind the fence the statue and the buildings.

I was so happy to see the pretty spring flowers and pansies in the planters.

The flowers below will be blooming soon with tulips and daffadils.  You can even see the pansies are starting to bloom.  I like how green everything looks.

I will be really happy once it feels like warm spring weather here.  I can't wait to not have to wear a scarf and heavy coat anymore.  You can even see how green the grass looks.

There are many statues scattered throughout Union Square Park.  There is even a small play ground for children to play in. (No photo).

Below, if you look you can see the brown building in the middle and that is Barnes & Noble.  This bookstore is one of my favorite places to visit.

Brown Building is Barnes & Noble

On this side of the street you can see all of the citibikes parked along the street for people to ride around the city.  I have NOT done that as I would not feel comfortable riding a bike in New York City!

City Bikes

Now we are inside of Barnes & Noble.  I love browsing and looking at all of the many books on the shelves.  I enjoy reading fiction books and I really like looking at the huge assortment of magazines.

Next I went up to meet my friends in the Starbucks cafe.  We usually look at magazines, knit and crochet at our leisure, while drinking our Starbucks coffee.

Once I left the book store, I decided to do a little shopping and then I took some more photos of the flowers in the Farmers Market.  Have you ever been there?  It's such a nice market and they have all kinds of specialty foods, breads, jellies, donuts, fruits, and vegetables.

They have such a huge variety of spring flowers now.  If you look closely it had been raining outside and the ground was full of puddles.

I really enjoyed looking at the colorful pansies and daffadils.  Spring flowers are the perfect way to cheer you up on a cold and dreary day!

Spring Plants

Look more plants.  Below are some really cute cactus plants.  I really liked them but at $15 dollars I thought that I could make my own for a lot less money.

I can't wait to visit a local home improvement store to purchase all of my spring flowers and vegetables.  I am really looking forward to some gardening in my yard.  Hopefully that will be real soon.

What is the weather like in your area and have you done any spring planting yet?

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed this little walk through Union Square with me.  Enjoy the rest of the week and weekend.

  2. I love Union Square! Thank you for bringing us along. I can see Spring is so close! I'm loving seeing little pops of color as the flowers start to bloom. It's been so slow in coming. I haven't planted anything yet. I will probably wait until around Mother's Day. I want to see what comes up!

  3. What a lovely time to stroll through Union Park, browse Barnes & Nobles, visit with your friends and then enjoy such pretty flowers! A lovely way to spend an early spring day! We haven't had all the storms that the northeast has gotten, but we have certainly had our share of snow this year, but thankfully for the most part it has now melted, and I am anxiously awaiting early blooms in my garden :) Blessings to you today!

  4. Thanks for the tour of union Square. Soon all the trees and flowers will be in full bloom.

We had 96 degrees when I came home from the hospital on Monday. Today it isn't as hot. My flowers are so pretty, I couldn't believe how the flowered while I was gone. So on Tuesday, in my nightgown I was out taking pictures of my stunning roses. I will try and do a post before I have my surgery. Just waiting on all the paper work to be completed. My son got me the most wonderful recliner that sets you on the floor - I love it.

Have a wonderful week with lots of sunshine. Thanks so much for your prayers.

    Hugs,
    Mary

  5. I am so surprised at the difference in green from Upstate NY to NYC! We don't have any yet! The grass is trying but otherwise it is still so brown and barren here. Thank you for the lovely walk. We are hoping to get there this summer again.

  6. What a fabulous day Julie. Meeting up with friends in such an iconic spot too. You are so lucky to be so close to so many wonderful parts of NYC. You are seeing more green and buds than we are here in Illinois. We are having a few warm days but they are saying by Sunday back to cold and freezing rain. Ugh!!! I am wondering now if we are going to go from winter right into summer and not really see Spring! Happy Thursday and have a great rest of the week.
    xoxo

  8. Hi Julie, I so enjoyed coming along with you on your visit to Union Square! So nice to have this tradition with your friends - sounds like the perfect day to me! Love all the beautiful sights that you have captured of early spring in New York. Just seeing all the pretty flowers really lifts the spirits. I recently had a very similar day with the Mr. We went to dinner with friends, then stopped at Barnes and Nobles to browse the book aisles and then had a nice coffee at the in-store Starbucks! It is the universal good time! Of course, our Barnes and Nobles is not nearly so historic and beautiful. Our spring is the same - very cool with the occasional hailstorm. We are all getting so anxious for warm sunshine. Hope you have a lovely weekend with some warm sun. xo Karen

  9. Hey Julie ..Thanks for the picture tour... I haven’t been to NYC for years, so this was a fabulous update... You are definitely ahead of us in the weather department. We live in the Eastern Canada and it’s still snowing with 6 foot drifts in the yard... however the sun is periodically shining( YEAH)... It is a great time for reading and visiting Barnes and Noble.. Our store is not is big as yours, but it does have a “Starbucks” where we can enjoy their latest "Rose Blossom Latte” ... That’s a huge plus !!! Thank You for sharing Springtime in NYC... It was fun... Hugs

  12. Julie ever since I moved back to the city I have been stunned by the beauty that is all around us. My kids joke with me that I behave like a tourist. But I used to live here years ago when Bryant Park was a war zone. So you can imagine my delight at the transformation. I have also been to the Barnes and Noble and the whole area is wonderful.
