Monthly Musings - May 2026/Summer 2026 Preview

May 28, 2026

I'm joining Patty for the Monthly Musings link-up.  The topic for this month is Summer 2026 Preview.

HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS:

1)  I went to the movies on Saturday with my husband to see The Devil Wears Prada 2.  I liked the movie, and I'm glad I saw it.  I don't think they had to wait so long for the second movie.

On Monday, we went to dinner with my daughter at a local pub we like.  The food and atmosphere are always good.

I got a bratwurst on a pretzel bun with sauerkraut and fries.  I could not finish the fries, so I took half of them home to eat for another time.

My husband got an Irish Spice Bag, which is basically chicken nuggets with fries, spices, and served with gravy.

My daughter got a buffalo chicken wrap and took half of it home to eat another time.

2)  My summer job when I was younger was to babysit kids for my neighbors.  It was a great way for me to make some extra money.

3)  I like to eat ice cream in the summer.  My favorites are mint chocolate chip and chocolate-flavored ice cream.

4)  I like lettuce, tomato, cheese, and ketchup on my hamburger.

On my hot dog, I like mustard and sauerkraut.

5)  I LOVE going to the beach!

6)  We will be renting a house at the Jersey Shore for the summer.  I'm so excited and the best part is that we will be able to bring our dog Lucy with us.

7)  We don't visit any amusement parks in the summer.  We used to when my daughter was little.

8)  I like eating outside in the summer when it's not too hot outside.  I love entertaining friends and family for BBQ's.

9)  My favorite summer beverage is an iced tea or iced coffee.

10)  Some of my favorite side dishes for a summer party are:  corn on the cob, watermelon salad, cucumber salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled asparagus, and French fries.

BRING ON SUMMER!  I can't wait to enjoy this summer!😎

Macy's Flower Show 2026

May 26, 2026

Hello friends.

I'm excited to share my visit to this year's Macy's Flower Show with you.🌸🌼

The flower show is held each spring at Macy's flagship store, located on 34th Street in New York City.

This is one tradition that I love doing every year.  For some reason, I missed sharing about the flower show for 2023 and 2024.  I did post up a few photos from last year on Instagram @brklynhousewife

I went with my husband to see all of the floral designs on Saturday morning, May 2nd.  It was a beautiful spring day for visiting the flower show.

The windows are decorated with beautiful floral displays.  It was hard taking a photo of the windows due to a lot of people posing for photos.

The birds were made with colorful fabric.

I loved the birdhouses, pinecones, and cute birds.

More colorful birds made with pretty fabric.

The floral displays were so pretty, and I love all of the vibrant colors of the flowers.

I love how this display shown below is made with yarn.  The girl is watering the flowers.  Look at the skirt and flowers made out of yarn.  It was so amazing to see everything.

Here is a floral display made of the United States.

This display shown below was made with LEGO's!

I enjoyed the flower show this year, and Macy's did a great job.  I loved the theme with the handmade birds and the girl watering the flowers.  I look forward to visiting again next spring.

Have you ever visited the Macy's flower show?

Spring Container Garden 2026

May 20, 2026

Hello friends.  I usually wait until May to start planting my container garden.  I'd love to share with you what I've bought and planted so far this spring.

Below, I put my little angel statue in this stone pot that my mom gave me.  I planted pink impatiens plants and some decorative garden stakes.  Most of my garden stakes are from the Dollar Tree store.

I bought the herbs below from Costco.  It has basil, rosemary, mint, and I think cilantro.

I went to Home Depot on Mother's Day and bought some more herbs.  I planted kale, peppers, and lettuce.  The planter below is from Lidl.  I love this little planter, and the price was great.  I only paid $17.99 for it.

I also bought some impatiens plants in light pink and dark pink.  I also planted one cherry tomato plant.

Below are the herbs I planted from Costco.  I needed more dirt and bought a huge bag at BJs.

I put repellent in each pot that I added and bought at Costco.   I'm using it so that it helps to keep the squirrels away.  In years past, the squirrels have ripped up my plants, and some of them died.  I am hoping I have better luck with my flowers and plants this year.

This is the repellent that I bought at Costco.  I'm not sure how well this is working as I had a few flowers that were dug up and I had to replant them.  It's such a struggle trying to keep the squirrels away.

I can't wait to watch everything grow and use the herbs for the summer.  I did not plant any cucumbers as I've never had any luck with them.  A few years ago, I planted a watermelon, and it grew, and we were able to eat it.  I have scaled back a little this year, but it's so fun watching everything grow for the spring and summer.  I can't wait for the basil to get big so that I can make pesto again.  I have a pesto recipe that you can find here.

Have you started your spring planting yet?

Books I've Read - May 2026

May 7, 2026

Hello friends, and happy May!

This was a good reading month for me, and I'd love to share those books with you.

Most of the books that I've read are from the library using the Libby app.  I love that I can read popular books that I can just download onto my Kindle.

Amazon

I enjoyed reading about this family drama that is set after a car accident.  This story kept me on my toes.

Amazon

My daughter bought this book to read and lent it to me.  It's a cute rom-com that is set in Italy.  It was such fun to read about being in Italy for 24 hours for a wedding and everything that takes place in that time.  I enjoyed hearing about all of the places they visited and the food.  The book even has a recipe to make an Italian dish.

Amazon

I enjoyed this book and other books by this author.  It's about a sort of writing competition for two authors who are trying to get and write about a reclusive woman's life.

If you have book recommendations, please let me know.

I will share this post at the monthly book link-up party, Share Your Shelf.  It's held on the first Thursday of each month.  Slices of Life
