Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

August 14, 2015

I just finished reading the book Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee.  There has been so much hype about this book because it was a lost and forgotten manuscript that was just discovered and published recently.  This is the sequel to the book To Kill a Mockingbird and if you missed my book review on that book you can click HERE to read about it.

This book is set 20 years after To Kill A Mockingbird with adult Jean Louise (Scout) who lives in New York City and decides to return to visit her father Atticus Finch.  While Jean Louise is visiting with her aging father she sees the town and people now in a different way.  She learns things about her father and the people close to her that she does not agree with and her uncle tries to help her understand things better.

My Thoughts:

I rushed out to buy this book on the first day that it was released.  I thought that Go Set A Watchman was very slow moving, which I found very boring.  What also bored me was Lee's style of writing because it differed from the way she wrote in To Kill A Mockingbird.  I didn't enjoy reading this book as I did with Lee's other book.

For me, To Kill A Mockingbird was an easy read, funny and interesting.  The character, Jean Louise, had some very funny lines and overall was a very well thought out character.  I don't feel the same way about the characters in this book.  Harper Lee's writing differs so much between the two books, so I think there must have been a reason why this wasn't published until now.

My overall opinion of Go Set A Watchman is that there was too much hype about it.  It was made to be this amazing sequel that was lost.  I think that Lee's publisher pushed too much to have this book published.  I, personally did not like this book but I know many people did.  You can be the judge of the book in the comments below.

I have a blog friend who enjoyed reading this book and you can read about her review HERE.

Have you read this book yet and did you like it?

  1. Thanks for sharing my review Julie!! I do think that coming from the South helps a reader relate to this book. And since it was not edited, it is a bit rough around the edges. I like both books but this one resonated a bit more with me because it takes place in a time that I can remember, just barely!!

  3. I have not read the book. I have also heard the mix reviews and I just loved the first one so much, it holds a dear place among childhood memories, that I wouldn't want to taint that. Glad you shared!

  5. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Julie! I wanted to pick this book up when it first came out and then I heard it was enjoyable but not as good as To Kill a Mockingbird. I think maybe I'll hint about it for Christmas. I'm still very interested in reading it myself, but not enough to rush out and buy it right now.

  7. Julie I always think that 'sequels' are never as good as the originals, but you've piqued my curiosity, so I'll be giving this one a go for sure. I wonder if you'd consider sharing this and other posts at Five Star Frugal Linkup which I've resurrected after a bit of a sabbatical. You know I'd be thrilled to have you...Love, Mimi xxx

  10. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my all time favorite books and I'm so glad I haven't read this one. I was afraid it wouldn't live up to her first book and now I won't have to feel bad about not reading it! Thanks so much for reading it so I don't have to! LOL!

  16. It's a shame when books don't live up to the hype! I'm not sure whether I want to read it as like you said there was obviously a reason why it wasn't published until now!
